When you’re a baby you experience everything for the very first time. You’re curious and perplexed; each day is a new adventure. Now, imagine having to go through that all over again at the age of 69. For Otis Johnson, the last 44 years have been spent behind walls, separated from the ever-changing world.
Johnson was sentenced to 44 years in prison at the age of 25, after attempted murder of a police officer. According to Notable, the last year that Johnson was a free man, the floppy disk had just been invented. Today he is experiencing so many things for the very first time, looking at the world through the eyes of a child.
Al Jazeera recently released a short video where Johnson talks about his life before prison, and his life now, including some of his reactions to new developments ranging from smart phones to the peanut butter and jelly hybrid spread.
While there are some funny and interesting moments, there are also some heartbreaking ones as Johnson explains that he is no longer in contact with any of his family—something that was always very important to him.
If anything, the video will remind you that even though our world is constantly changing and growing, the only thing you can do is learn to adapt at your own pace.
